Pupils at Killarney primary school have started planting their own orchard- one tree at a time.
the first tree, a plum, was planted by pupils jake and k Elisha last week. Teacher Robyn smith said it was a vision of the school to have a productive orchard. " we've started with one fruit tree, but if we can get 20 that would be nice," she said. "I am putting my hand up asking people if they have any tree we can have. "The years 3-4's are involved and it's an opportunity to introduce them to what nature can give us. "They can watch the trees grow and, hopefully, produce fruit before they leave the school." The school is involved in sustainability Victoria's 'resourcesSmart Australian sustainable schools' initiative. Pupils take on roles which include monitoring energy use; recycling paper, cardboard and plastics;and lunchtime walks to pick up rubbish. Killara has complete two of five tasks required to become a five-star sustainable school. About 200 tree and shrubs were planted at the school last month as part of National schools' tree planting Day.
