BEFORE:
As we made our way to the age care facility I began to grow butterflies. I think that the reason i was nervous was partly because i had to put myself out there, go up to someone i have never met, that could be seriously ill and start a Conversation. I knew though that it would make a difference to talk to people that may not get much visits from family and friends very often and even help me to be more open and confident.
DURING:
As we walked into the facility and entered the activity room I received this feeling that made me feel sorry for the people sitting on the couches watching T.V. I walked into the room and sat down next to a women named Audrey. This women had dementia and seemed very lonely, she told me that she liked to watch the trees move and sway from side to side. I began to feel comfortable in the environment and realised that the conversation i would share with this women just could make her day. As we changed over to talk to someone else i sat by a lady called Anne, she told me, " child, promise to live your life to the fullest, because when you get to my age you don't realise how precious life is." From that point i began to open my eyes and realise just how valuable life is, how precious and delicate, that if you mess it up ,you wont get another chance!
Afterwards:
Once we stepped out of the building, a strange feeling filled my stomach. In fact I was happy and I felt good about myself going out and helping in the simplest way in the community. I think that the trip was a great experience and made us think about the impact of our actions and how it affects the people we help.
